Volkswagen Type 2 Jurgens Autovilla Coachbuilt Motorhome VW Bay Window Campervan

Excellent original condition, one owner* only 31k miles

….Welcome to the sale of our charming, right hand drive, 1974 Volkswagen Type 2 Jurgens Autovilla. In excellent condition with only 31k miles, a one owner vehicle* with original factory bodywork (interior, panels & paint) and 1800 twin carb air cooled engine & gearbox. Introduction to the Jurgens Autovilla: In the 1970’s the leading coach builders, Jurgens of South Africa, produced their Autovilla motorhome based on pre-registration, high spec VW Type 2 Transporters, supplied directly from Volkswagen. The Autovilla design was so well respected that Germany’s famous coach builders Karmann reproduced them in Europe as the left hand drive Karmann Gypsy after negotiating a license from Jurgens. At their factory, Jurgens hand-built their motorhome body and crafted it to the well-loved Bay Window chassis, offering a motorhome with greater superiority in space and luxury compared to the much smaller and common, standard campervan conversions done by Westfalia & others and usually only in left hand drive. Very few Autovillas – possibly only about 10 – roam the British roads these days, due to their rarity. Our Autovilla’s specification: The light and roomy accommodation consists of a central entrance with wardrobe & sun roof above and leads past the kitchen to the rear living area which seats four around the table and converts easily to a large double bed (to a size that would make most rock’n’roll beds jealous). There is lots of storage. The kitchen comprises of cupboards, oven & grill, countertop with hobs, sink, drainer and power points. Opposite is the large refrigerator and even more storage. The separately enclosed private compartment has a vanity area with cabinet, washbasin & mirror and enough space for a WC & shower. The whole of the rear accommodation is easily accessed from the front cab which opens through between the front seats to standing room in the living spaces. It also has the optional large four berth, factory tent & awning that looks like it’s hardly been used (see photo of actual item, taken on an African coast…). All of the windows in the rear have vents and the back window opens out safari style. The side door has a sliding window and they all have fly screens. There are 2 skylights over the sun roof for increased light and air flow and it even has the original Blaupunkt stereo tape deck with a speaker system throughout the motorhome. The 1800cc engine was recently serviced and runs lovely – it starts up fine and pulls away a lot better than you’d expect and the fuel economy isn’t at all too bad either. You’re soon rolling along easily, enjoying the freedom of the road. And grinning… The suspension, brakes, clutch and steering are all functioning well and have also been serviced & replaced as necessary and the gears shift free & smoothly – it drives as good as it looks. Our Autovilla’s condition & history: *This is essentially a one owner vehicle from new (in addition to me and the dealer I bought it from – who’ve given it very little use). The retired couple who owned it from new only put 30k miles on the clock over the 41 years they loved this classic vehicle. They looked after it very well and it is in very, very clean undamaged condition. Only the rear cushion covers & blinds aren’t original. Everything else (except the tyres, etc.) is. From the engine and gearbox, to the hub caps. Even the gas bottle is original, as is the tropical hardwood interior & fittings, and most importantly the coach built bodywork, the cab panels and paint. Our Autovilla has spent its cherished life in the center of South Africa and when it wasn’t taken out once a year for the annual holiday in the warm, dry African climate, it was kept safe and secure in storage. Because the van has enjoyed these conditions, hundreds of miles away from the sea and with no salt on the roads in the winter, the chassis and panels are virtually completely and entirely rust free and particularly, they are totally and absolutely rot free. It had an underseal treatment in South Africa before coming to the UK, but the undercarriage photos shown how clean it was before the work was done. The other photos were taken last year at the house before it went into winter storage, and demonstrate its great condition. As it retains its original paintwork, there’s no hidden damage repairs, nor an immense history of being extensively rebuilt, restored and refurbished – to whatever standard… With this van, what you see is what you get (you get a lot and it looks great)! Testament to the craftsmanship and of how well it has been looked after, and arguably the best example in the UK, if not possibly even one of the best worldwide. The Autovilla’s next guardians: We toyed with the idea of becoming the next guardians of this wonderful piece of VW history for a while, but realised she’s a bit too good for us and we don’t need the option of all that extra room and storage – our collection also includes another pride and joy, our rough and ready T25 Syncro off-road camper that keeps us entertained and roaming free, so, reluctantly but appropriately we want to pass the Autovilla on to some deserving family or cherishing collector who will love, enjoy and appreciate her as she deserves. Our ‘Villa is very cute and an incredibly rare example – in this condition and originality – of a piece of campervan and motorhome history that offers a VW enthusiast the chance to finally own a lovely retro, factory built Bay Window motorhome with far grander levels of space & luxury than a campervan – not just more practical & comfortable to explore in but even more ‘Dub on the road too. And she’s not been a centerfold yet or to a show either… With this lovely, cheeky little, attention seeking van you can just drive and go (and smile)! You may choose to do a couple of other bits & bobs; take off the roof storage [definitely!], lower the suspension & stick some Fuchs wheels on, reupholster the fabric in a suitable 70’s material, fit a modern sound system and have your dream camper… Or not, it’s up to you. Like I said, as she is, you can just drive and go (on an adventure this summer). I chose to leave her exactly as she came to me, so people can see how original she is. I strongly recommend that any genuinely serious, potential buyer should come over for a chat & a brew and are welcome to carry out any inspections they’d like to verify the above and negotiate a sale. VW Vans & buses in rare marques like this and certainly in as good, original condition and with such low mileage as this, do not come around often and only increase in value. The photos speak for themselves (high res available here: Any inspection is welcome and encouraged to appreciate this lovely vehicle.
